When the SDGs Become Personal: Reflections from CauxIDG
There are moments when you realize you’re not just facilitating a conversation, you’re witnessing more personal ways of seeing & relating begin to emerge.
Through deep listening & generative dialogue, we created a space where proven coaching techniques opened hearts & minds. We listened as participants stepped into a different field, one where their personal connection to the SDGs wasn’t just intellectual, but personal & real.
The magic happened in those quiet moments between words, when someone would pause. We watched as one participant found her voice through SDG 5 (Gender Equality), discovering this exercise offered a powerful way to advocate for the issues & values she promotes. That her deepest convictions could be represented through the voice of this global goal, giving her work new resonance.
We listened to a remarkable woman from South Sudan as she connected with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), her eyes lighting up as she recognized her life’s work in conflict resolution reflected in this framework. As the lady continued to glance at the SDGs laid out before her, something beautiful happened: she also felt drawn to SDG 15 (Life on Land) & began sharing the story of her grandfather, the revered “Rain man” of their village back home in Sudan. As the respected elder & village chief, he held the sacred ability to call the rain for crops, connecting her family’s ancestral wisdom to the land with her current role as a peacemaker. In that moment, the SDGs weren’t just global targets on a piece of paper, they were the continuation of a legacy that she identified with & had made personal with her very being. 🌿
This is what the #CauxIDG Forum does so beautifully, it reminds us that sustainable change doesn’t flow from strategies alone..
When we operate from this place of being, influence & empowerment don’t need to be manufactured or forced. They flow naturally through us.
Looking around that candlelit room, seeing faces illuminated not just by flame but by recognition & purpose, I was reminded why this work matters. The SDGs aren’t just global goals, but why not invitations to become the change we wish to see, from the inside out. 🕯️
The SDGs are so broad, so ambitious & to no surprise, increasingly out of reach. But what if the starting point isn’t the global challenge, but a moment in your own story?
Is there something, an experience, a choice, a part of your life perhaps that connects you to one of the goals, even in a small way?
